As I walk in familiar and unfamiliar places, reflected light, curves, and patterns pull my attention away from whatever I’m thinking about, even when I’m not searching. Often what I find is quite small. The closer the camera to the subject, the narrower the depth of field. Most of the image is out of focus. To overcome this problem I use a technique called focus stacking. Many of my photographs are composed of several images—each focused on a narrow slice. When the images are combined, the photograph shows the subject in focus, offering an opportunity to study the plant or insect in detail.
